My illustrations from the book “Taken Captive by Birds”

My illustrations were inspired by the memoir as well as the character and behaviour of each bird portrayed in this book. Every chapter is dedicated to the significance a particular bird had in Marguerite Poland’s life. Marguerite’s ability to describe birds, places, events and people in the finest detail fed my creative mind inspiring creativity. Working with her has been an honour and an experience that I will always cherish. Limited edition prints are available.

Taken Captive by Birds is a collection of acclaimed author Marguerite Poland’s ‘discovery’ of birds as a child and the role they have played in her and her family’s life. Interwoven with the personal story are the myths, traditions and meanings behind birds and their names within Zulu and Xhosa culture. The book is divided into 18 chapters, each of which loosely deals with one particular bird or, sometimes, a grouping of birds.
